REPORT OF THE MEETING

The 44th Annual Meeting of the Arizona-Nevada
Academy of Science was held at the University
of Arizona on April 15, 2000. About 30 people
attended the Friday evening presentation by Victor
Baker, Regents Professor and Head of the
Department of Hydrology who spoke on
"Science and Public Policy: Is it a Dysfunctional
Relationship?"

The awards luncheon on Saturday was attended
by abut 150 people. Presentations for Outstanding
Service Award, The Bud Ellis Scholarship Award,
three Best Science Teacher Awards, two
High School Grants-in-Aid, and two spring Graduate
Grants-in-Aid were made.

Approximately 110 people registered for the meetings
at which about 78 papers were given including eight
poster presentations.

The Junior Academy meeting was also held at the
University of Arizona on April 15, 2000. About
28 students made presentations.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD

Gordon Johnson was honored at the business
meeting with a plaque and a check for $50 as
this year's winner of the Outstanding Service
Award. Gordon has been a Director, Past
President of the Academy, and is concluding
a long term as Permanent Secretary.


FELLOWS OF THE ACADEMY

Based on their standing in the scientific
community and service to the Academy, the
following members were named Fellows of
ANAS:
    Vic Baker, University of Arizona
    Jan Bowers, United States Geological Survey
    Owen Davis, University of Arizoina
    Don Post, University of Arizona

HIGH SCHOOL GRANTS-IN-AID

Awards of $100 were given to each of the following
high school students:
    Bridget Sellers, Smith Valley School, Smith, Nevada. Bridget is investigation the "Prolonged Effects of Aerosols Used on Small Farms and Ranches" under the direction of Randi Hunewill, her high school science teacher.

    Diane Eisenbacher, Saint Mary's High School, Phoenix, Arizona. Diane is investigating the "Effects of Methanol on the Coleus Blumee Plant" under the direction of Don Galen, her high school science teacher.

BEST POSTER SESSION

The best poster with $50 was awarded to Joy
Gillick from the University of Arizona. Her
poster was entitled:
"Hydrogeochemistry of the Rincon Valley, Arizona."


BUD ELLIS SCHOLARSHIP

Douglas Jarczyk wo is graduating from Ironwood
High School in Glendale, Arizona, was the winner
of the Bud Ellis Scholarship. This $800 Scholarship
will help Douglas pursue his studies in Chemical
Engineering at Arizona State University.


GRADUATE GRANTS-IN-AID

Two awards of $250 were given to each of the
following graduate students who met the March
15, 2000, deadline for applications:
    Joseph Gilbert, Department of Geoscience, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His Research Project is the "Structural Geometry and Kinematics of Mesozoic Contraction and Cenozoic Extension; Tectonic Implications for the Central Nevada Thrust Belt, Pancake Range, Central Nevada."

    He will be working under the guidance of his major professor
    Wanda J. Taylor
    Ilsa Schiefelbein, Department of Geoscience, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her Research Project is the "Fault Segmentation, Linkage, and Earthquake Hazard: Examples from the Sevier Fault, Southwestern Utah."

    She will be working under the guidance of her major professor
    Wanda J. Taylor

OUTSTANDING SCIENCE TEACHER AWARD

The three outstanding science teachers were honored
at the Annual Meeting Luncheon with plaques and
checks for $50.
