ANAS is an affiliate of AAAS and NAAS |
AN UPDATE ON OUR AAAS AFFLIATES--- submitted by Stephen M. ShusterThe AAAS Affiliates Meeting was held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, Friday February 12, 2004. Alan Leshner, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Publisher, Science began the meeting stating that his goal is to use AAAS affiliates in a more productive way; updating an AAAS listserv. He reported that AAAS is doing well and that the Society will promote a Family Science Day at its 2004 meeting. Al Teich, Director of Science and Policy Programs discussed what is being done at AAAS to develop an understanding of and responses to changes in the technology and education in the wake of 9/11. A website has been established that contains the details of this project www.aaas.org/spp/post911/ateich@aaas.org. Shirley Malcom, Director of Education and Human Resources discussed the implications of recent Affirmative Action rulings and detailed the proceedings of a meeting held in January of 2004. In light of the Supreme Court rulings on the University of Michigan Law School case, it was affirmed that there is value in diversification at public universities. The conclusion reached in the meeting is that there must be leadership from institutions on how this ruling will be implemented. Donald Kennedy, President of AAAS discussed the convergence of science, technology, law and policy. Kennedy reported that in his NAS committee on science and lay persons, they discussed the importance of expert witnesses and the quality of foresic science. In light of the Shelby Admendment, stating that all federally funded research must make their results available to anyone and that the results of such research must be repeatable, several addition rulings have been made. Notably, the Data Quality Act, which specifies that any advice issued by the government to its citizens is subject to evaluation with respect to quality, relevance and reproducibility of the data.. Will this lead to situations where all results need to be reproduced, no. May possible provisions lead to scrutiny well beyond what is reasonable, it is possible. The issue appears to be that there is a gap in the public and political perception of what science is and what it actually is. Current government/public policy requests absolute recommendations from research, but absolute proof is impossble in science. |
