ANAS SEEKING OFFICERS

The three ANAS offices described below are currently vacant. If you have interest in serving the academy in one of these offices please contact the President of the ANAS, Owen Davis. His address is on the first page.

Membership Secretary

The duties of the Membership Secretary include keeping records of the membership, preparing and mailing notices of dues, keeping a record of the dues paid by the members, providing mailing labels for the various mailings of the Academy, and presenting to the Board of Governors a report on the current membership of the Academy. Knowledge of data base management software such as Access is imperative.

Two Directors
Southern Arizona and Nevada

The duties of the Director are to promote membership in the Academy and encourage members and non-members in their region to submit papers to the Journal and present research results at the Annual Meeting. The Directors hold office for two years or until a successor is elected.


REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR
ASSOCIATE EDITORS OF THE
JOURNAL

The ANAS is looking for four volunteers in the following disciplines to become Associate Editors of the Journal:

  1. Conservation and Biology
  2. Anthropology and Geology
  3. Hydrology and Geography
  4. Science Education and General Science

The Associate Editors will assist the Editor in soliciting and reviewing manuscripts for the Journal. The Associate Editors will also work with the Membership Secretary in maintaining the mailing lists for the Journal.

With the impending retirement of our current Journal Editor, we hope that one or more of the Associate Editors will assume the role of the Editor or Co-Editors.

Research on the Colorado
Plateau Conference
October 25-28

The Fifth Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau will be held at the NAU DuBois Conference Center, October 25-28. The conference is a scientific forum of research related to the biological, paleontological, anthropological, physical, and social sciences of the Colorado Plateau. The conference is a collaboration between academic groups and The Department of the Interior land managment agencies. This year's theme celebrates NAU's centenial year and one hundred fifty years of the U.S. Department of the Interior. NECROLOGY REPORT

Dr. Gerald A. Cole, 81, of Chandler, a retired professor emeritus of zoology at Arizona State University, died June 22, 1999. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut and was a World War II veteran. Survivors include his daughters, Sally Mooney and Wendy Singleton; sons, Jeff, Tom and Steve; sister, Phyllis Deming; and five grandchildren.

APPLICATION FOR
GRADUATE STUDENT
RESEARCH GRANTS-IN-AID

The Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science will award Grants-in Aid in amounts up to $250 to students who are enrolled in a graduate program at one of the universities in Nevada or Arizona and who are members of the Academy. The grant funds may be used for any activity directly associated with an ongoing research project (equipment purchase, supplies, travel to field site, etc.) The funds may not be used for travel to scientific meetings, publication costs or any other activity not directly associated with the research.

Graduate students receiving grants must agree to submit a report not to exceed eight pages in length to the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science. It will be considered for publication in the Journal. If the report is published, the Academy will waive page charges.

Grants are reviewed two times a year but an individual only may be awarded on a one time per year basis. Deadline for submission is November 15.

Send five copies of application accompanied by five copies of a letter of support to the Grants-in-Aid Committee, Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science in care of:
