Minutes of ANAS Board Meeting
Residence of Florence Slater, Flagstaff, Az
Friday April 11, 2003
In attendance were Kathy Lauckner, Robert Reavis, Karen Conzelman, William Perry Baker,
Tony Brazel, Aregai Tecle, Owen Davis, Steve Schuster, and Florence Slater,
who also played hostess.
Aregai reminded the Board that extensive changes in the by laws have been
proposed and are to be voted on by the Academy tomorrow during the Annual Meeting.
One hundred and forty people have preregistered for the Annual Meeting. We can add
an additional ten for the luncheon during registration tomorrow. Many of the
meeting expenses have been covered by sponsors whom we wish to thank. The Office of
the Vice-Provost for Academic Affairs and Graduate Dean donated $1000;
the College of Arts and Sciences donated $250;
the College of Ecosystem Science and Management donated $786.40;
the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences donated $500;
and the School of Forestry donated $700.
These donations will cover the costs of the luncheon and the coffee breaks.
Science Education and Anthropology sections did not make this year.
Two awards will be given for best student presentations and one award for
best student poster. Psychology faculty at Glendale Community College have
expressed interest in developing a Psychology section for the Meetings.
It was agreed that Robert Reavis would communicate further with B Jacobs and Sue Oliver.
Tony Brazel reported that Les Landrum has an special issue on Vascular Plants of Arizona
ready to go to the printer. The first issue for volume 36 of the regular Journal
will be out soon and sufficient papers have been received for Volume 36 - 2.
Back issues are selling for $6 a piece for regular issues and $10 each for the special issues.
Ingrid sent a report that we currently have 199 registered members. Thirty-eight
institutions have paid for volume 35. She wondered if it would be worth while to
try to expand the number of library subscriptions. If yes, what would be the best
way to approach them? Perry said he would consult his librarian.
Two graduate grant-in-aids were given out this year. There are currently three
applicants for new grant-in-aids. There will be two awards given for outstanding
science teachers this year. There were only two applicants. The suggestion was made
that perhaps we should survey science teachers to learn why they are not applying.
The undergraduate grant-in-aid was not advertised this year. Steve announced that the
Bud Ellis Scholarship Award winner is Nicole Corcoran and she will attend the luncheon.
The Outstanding Service Award will be given to Dr. Milt Sommerfeld.
The slate of officers for next year was completed with the nomination of Owen Davis as President-Elect.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM.
Respectfully submitted by
Betsy Cooper
